Major James Coldwell took over as leader of the CCF upon J.S. Woodsworth death in 1942.  Where Woodsworth was the strong evangelizing social gospel voice in Parliament for those in need, Coldwell, was the Via Media of the socialist movement, moving the CCF away from the Regina Manifesto, to the more moderate and big tent Winnipeg Declaration which would set the stage for Tommy Douglas’ move to become leader of the party as it was reformed and rechristened the NDP.
