In a province quickly gaining a reputation for tumultuous politics, few have demonstrated the uncanny nature of the Alberta legislature more than Dr. Raj Sherman.

An emergency room doctor who was elected a Progressive Conservative MLA in 2008, he became a local folk hero when he criticized his own government on emergency room wait times. In 2010, he was suspended from caucus and sat as an independent MLA before seeking the leadership of the official opposition party.

At the time trying to stanch the ongoing vote bleed, the Alberta Liberals created a new category of non-paying registered supporters — in addition to paid members — ahead of the party’s leadership race in September.


Drawing on the Alberta example, the federal Liberals approved a similar policy during their last convention in January, and said they hope to implement the tiered membership next month.
