The Manitoba teachers’ union wants the provincial government to prevent parents from pulling their children out of sex ed classes or other curriculum items they may object to.

The Manitoba Teachers’ Society voted on the weekend to lobby the province and school boards to prevent parents from opting out of any class. The resolution was originally intended to ensure all students attended sex education classes, but delegates to the annual general meeting “voted to make the policy more comprehensive as an apparent show of support for the full curriculum,” according to the MTS website.


The Winnipeg Free Press reported that Park West teacher Adam Grabowski told delegates that he knew a Hutterite school principal who had vowed to leave the public school system if forced to teach sexuality.

Mr. Grabowski predicted other faith groups would remove their children.
