Charles and Myrtle Fillmore, Marianne Williamson, Hildegaard de Benign, Meister Eckhart, Francis of Assisi, Eric Butterworth, Ignatius of Lyola, Clare of Assisi, John Shelby Spong, Dorothy Day & Peter Maurin, Thomas Merton, Matthew Fox to name but a few who over time have resonated with the Holy Mystery in a way the disciple, John, did. From monastic to mystic communities to Creation Spirituality, to Unity there is a history that resonates within the Christianities still today. The original writings of John within the canonical Christian Testament show the Gnostic/philosophical/metaphysic under pinning of the community his travels founded. As we know, each disciple post resurrection went forth planting seeds an sprouting different trees within the same forest. Digging new wells for the Holy River to be tasted from.

The elder to the elect lady and her children, whom I love in truth, and not only I, but also all who know the truth, because of the truth that abides in us and will be with us forever:

Grace, mercy, and peace will be with us, from God the Father and from Jesus Christ the Father’s Son, in truth and love.

-Epistle of 2 John 1-3 (English Standard Version)

It is these communities John writes to in his shortest letter between 85-95 CE. One led within the Holy Feminine, through a matriarchal leadership lens in his second epistle. But it has a a bedrock in the Love Commandment, that is the Sacrament of Service.

I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we[a] have worked for, but may win a full reward.Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting,11 for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.

-Epistle of 2 John 4-11 (English Standard Version)

What is the source of actions? Does the means and ends resonate in the same harmony? These are considerations for one who abides in Holy Love, would not be wrecking destruction. Would not be leading others into the shadows, or to give into their Gremlins or setting them up for failure. That is the anti-Christs (antithesis of the Cosmic Christ, the opposite)… what is seen in the Empire that controls the world they know.

John is encouraging a steady travel. He knows that many will look to those groups that are growing rapidly, building projects, money coming in as the end that is needed in growing the teaching. It is seen in the flash and glam. Yet, that is not what John is writing about, he is reminding the communities that it is about depth of character, and discovery of true being that is the most important. It is not the “sexiest” of the work, it is not something that brings glory or riches, but it brings the greatest reward.

Though I have much to write to you, I would rather not use paper and ink. Instead I hope to come to you and talk face to face, so that our joy may be complete.

13 The children of your elect sister greet you.

-Epistle of 2 John 12-13

And the ending in our crazy busy world. Where everyone is constantly connected and on call. Where it can appear technology is replacing everything from community gatherings to social events is an ancient and modern reminder for the reader. There are many things he can easily communicate or teach through writing, but that is not how life is done. John is coming to spend time, break bread, and abide within the community.

When was the last time you slowed life down? Turned off the technological noise, and simply were with your self? Your family? Your neighbours? Your community?

For the Sacred Service of the Love Commandment begins with the simple act of BEING.

For to be, is the beginning of BELONGING.
