I could do a mediumship slight of hand saying I never had proof of the spirits that continue to be with us and guide us in life. BUT those who have ever read me, heard me speak, or spent time in deeper conversations (y’know the kind us introverts enjoy) would see the bullocks espoused.

But what it was an aha moment this week in the ACH with my son post surgery after his duel foot reconstruction that we felt that there was an angel watching over, and yes it was my Dad that noted it.  Y’see my Grandma (the lad’s Great Grandma, and yes the first celebration of life I ever presided over in ministry) was named Iva. It’s a name that I have never encountered in anyone except her in my whole life. My Dad noted never having met another with the name in his life.

Yet here was a student nurse, aiding the team providing care to my boy, who shared her name. After realizing this there was some similarities between the two. More importantly however, there was an explanation of the feeling of peace on the unit post surgery.

So take from it what you will, but if you ask my son, he knows who was in the room supporting him ethereally. For he walks with those who have transitioned, and continue to be important parts of his life, and you see this by simply looking into his diamond shimmer blue eyes and see all those souls of the past reflecting inwards and outwards in the web of love that connects us all.

Susan’s finger tapped the front page of the paper. A clear helmet cam shot of the potato sack covered head and the headline clear as day “Bionic is Back!” I admit I dropped the secondary name to go for the more Stan Lee style flare, but a by-line with a freelance cheque goes nicely for a start to the sabbatical. A fuzzier picture pulled from someone’s twitter feed of me blasting back off into the air.

“I thought you were on sabbatical?” Not sure if she was implying the super hero shenanigans or from the journalist perspective. Her dirty blonde hair was highlighted by white hairs, some from being a mother, some from being a caregiver to her aging parents in the first steps of dementia, but mostly she credits to me and the vocations that chose me.

The paper was on the kitchen table, kids were already on their buses to school (both our children were differently-abled, which sadly meant in Alberta Education and the Calgary Board of Education we could not choose our schools, they were designated for them. Upside great support in the school, downside because of ablest parents out there bitching had to pay for busing because it wasn’t fair that parents that chose to send their kids to school not their designated had to pay—end soapbox).  Took a sip of my morning coffee. Her green eyes would be flaming if she had magic to go with her medium-ship. Yes my beautiful wife can easily feel and converse with the energies of the other realms. She was the silent third partner in John and I’s duo.

Which with where the weird adventures Gerklyn then Merlin took us through, was a good thing to have someone like her on our side. It was one of the earliest adventures that gave her the permanent blue flame hair streak down the middle. “You said sabbatical to sort things out, I mean since your supposed death there has been no clear `evidence’ if you will that the Knight was active again.” A loud snore from Pen on the counter followed by two short puffs of smoke rings.

Another sip, she is geared up this morning and not much I can say about having saved a life is going to save my hide from a night on the sofa. But truly, a Killer Face resurfacing is a sign of something. Not sure how it fits in with the maybe spirit of John that visited me in the graveyard.  “I am sorting things out.” Wonder if I should tell her about John, it would peak her curiosity, just like in the old days, and especially since his final exorcism and death she is still shocked he has not come to say hi, not even to our twin daughters that share their mother’s gifting.

“By playing underwear outside your clothes again? You said full well after nearly dying to end the darkness, that was it. A few favours for John and that’s…” She pauses, damn it I can’t hide much in my cow eyes from my soul mate, my lightning rod, and after John’s name tumbled from her lips bingo. “that’s what this is about, putting John to rest finally?”

I gulp what’s left of my coffee. She is going to kill me. “Partly. Putting him to rest, and finally discovering what wielding this magic realm here and now is all about.”

“Fuck you Rick Saturn, you are not allowed to have a mid-life crisis.” Mid-life crisis? This isn’t about a run of the mill mid-life crisis? It is about finding out if my friend is finally at peace at the very least, or at best… “Ah me Ricky, don’t go after the big R on this one.”  But she doesn’t get it. If it was her I would. “We know how purgatory works, and that with his death all that was tormenting him here was finally sheared away.”

“Yada yada yada. So, he is the pure energy-cosmic being as part of the Cosmos, I get it babe. Trust me, enough of my mates have gone to the great beyond and not returned. But there is precedence for the return, and what if?” I leave it dangling, what more can I say.  So many have appeared dead to the world yet returned. So if my friend died due to being possessed/controlled by an alien force masquerading as a demi-god dubbed Thor…then why could he not have survived and just need his corporeal self pulled back together?

Susan’s green flame eyes pierce into mine. One of those rare moments in our lives when I know she is staring deeply into the depths of my soul. She finishes her porridge, and her coffee. Picks up the paper, and walks over to me.

Silence is deafening.

She kisses the top of my head and drops the paper in front of me.

“If you truly believe you can bring him back, then quit pissing about with this bull shit.”

She kisses me again on the cheek and leaves for the day, she is going to be an art therapy volunteer at the kids’ school. She leaves me in the kitchen of our bungalow as she heads out for the day.  Time for a refill on both porridge and coffee. The front page does haunt me as I sit back down. Just the coincidence of starting a sabbatical to discover myself a new, and one of the first villains I faced is there trying to be a ne’er do well.

Cell vibrating. Click open. “Hello?”

“Rick, we need to talk about John. Come to the ashram.” Zed Said.

Tim Horton’s is the stereotypical cuppa for a Canadian, but for consistency one knows to go to McCafe at McDonalds. That was where this warm cup of double-double came from. Pen was snoring away in my inside coat pocket of a brown leather bomber. The Habs cap was pulled low, and my salt and pepper beard was giving away my age as I watched and waited across the road.

John’s voice from the cemetery still rings in my ears. Before it was silenced and vanished. So here I stand watching the old city hall and wondering if there is anything to be learned here from watching politicians’ do the shuffle. Another sip. And shuffle on into the square, past the statues of the Famous Five with theatre crowds letting out.

How do I explain the lost night to Susan? She who is the love of my life, since time immortal? She who would be putting the kids to bed again without me. I should’ve gone home sooner, not just standing in the street lit downtown waiting on what? Someone I know who is dead to walk out of City Hall? A mayor that died under weird circumstances, but still got a hero’s funeral because…well he was still a hero. The one who took the mask off to step in to true public service. Is that what the haunting voice is about? This time of sabbatical is to explore and learn about who I am, without the powers or is it to finally truly accept who I am as a powerful entity?

That is the fear. What if after all these years channeling the power I no longer have a human soul? Even though some would call Susan my lightning rod, she whose love pulled me back from the dark dimensions more time than nought.  The low rumble of sirens. Like a third eye flash—police—something—seriously?

“C’mon Ricky boy, let loose for a change.” That voice of familiarity ringing in my heart. Just like when we were teenagers, and I would always caution John, but he was willing to bounce right in to the fray.

A crack of thunder, and lightning flashes across the sky like a bolt from Zeus’ hands of Olympus.

The cars are coming up First Street SW by the convention centre, heading towards the Anglican Cathedral. Rounding the corner to see clearly with my own eyes.

The shriek is deafening. The horrible potato sack mask and the bad thrift store clown outfit. It can’t be. Can it?

I gulp the last of the coffee and move towards it. A family in trouble, the father is out, and the other dad is trying to shield the kid. And the sledge hammer is up for another strike from the original deal. The first supervillain I ever tussled with that spawned 26 sequels: Killer Face.

Exhale slowly. Looks like Johnny may get his wish. It’s been awhile since I needed the bravado, but for some reason I can’t switch at will. What is up with the power down? Going to need to talk to Pen about that later, but first. A simple whisper as I role my ring on my right hand’s ring finger. “Bionics on.”

The lightning strikes.

The potato sack covered head jerks at the sound of the boom.

The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus Christ is a new age text that reimagines the Jesus narrative as a universal spiritual journey that ties together eternal truths. It is not a reimagining in false, but touches into intuitive pieces of the story, mystery pieces that gnostic/mystic writers have been answering in “non-canonical” writings for centuries.

It is a story of living into and out of the love of the Holy Mystery. It is the story of how this attunement removes the ego of individualism that destroys self. The journey from birth to death…the reasons behind the assassination of the peasant labourer become travelling mystic rabbi can be found in the Sermon on the Mount/Plains.  This is a journey reflection for the sojourner on these passages as channeled by Levi H. Dowling (1920) in his work:

Prayer is the deep communion of the soul with God;

-Aquarian Gospel 94:2

Meister Eckhart said if the only prayer you said was thank you that would be sufficient. It is true, for it is in these moments of deep oneness that words become irrelevant, for we empty ourselves of the ego that allows for injustice to reign.

Deception is hypocrisy, and you shall not assume to be what you are not.

-Aquarian Gospel 94:18

Yet it is Ignatius of Loyola that gifted us with the Lectio Divina the sacred reading of hearing the sacred words three times to see what the Holy was saying to us.

This is a bit more than hearing of three times, for it is taking time to become contemplative, to enter the story. To rest within that which gave us life, and learn what it means to live out of and through that love.

Take a moment to reflect on the continuing Sermon on the Mount in

Chapter 95:

The Sermon on the Mount, continued. Jesus pronounces the eight beatitudes and the eight woes. Speaks words of encouragement. Emphasises the exalted character of the apostolic work.

1. And Jesus and the twelve went to the mountain top, and Jesus said,
2. Twelve pillars of the church, apostles of the Christ; light-bearers of the sun of life and ministers of God to men:
3. In just a little while you must go forth alone, and preach the gospel of the king, first to the Jews and then to all the world.
4. And you shall go, not with a scourge of cords to drive; you cannot drive men to the king;
5. But you shall go in love and helpfulness and lead the way to right and light.
6. Go forth and say, The kingdom is at hand.
7. Worthy are the strong in spirit; theirs the kingdom is.
8. Worthy are the meek; they shall possess the land.
9. Worthy they who hunger and thirst for right; they shall be satisfied.
10. Worthy are the merciful; and mercy shall be shown to them.
11. Worthy they who gain the mastery of self; they have the key of power.
12. Worthy are the pure in heart; and they shall see the king.
13. Worthy they who are maligned and wronged because they do the right; their persecutors they shall bless.
14. Worthy is the trustful child of faith; he shall sit in the throne of power.
15. Be not discouraged when the world shall persecute and call you curst; but rather be exceeding glad.
16. The prophets and the seers, and all the good of earth, have been maligned.
17. If you are worthy of the crown of life you will be slandered, vilified and curst on earth.
18. Rejoice when evil men shall drive you from their ways and cause your name to be a hiss and by-word in the street.
19. I say, rejoice; but deal in mercy with the doers of the wrong; they are but children at their play; they know not what they do.
20. Rejoice not over fallen foes. As you help men rise from the depth of sin, so God will help you on to greater heights.
21. Woe to the rich is gold and lands; they have temptations multiforms.
22. Woe unto men who walk at will in pleasure’s paths; their ways are full of snares and dangerous pits.
23. Woe to the proud; they stand upon a precipice; destruction waits for them.
24. Woe to the man of greed; for what he has is not his own; and lo, another comes; wealth is gone.
25. Woe to the hypocrite; his form is fair to look upon; his heart is filled with carcasses and dead men’s bones.
26. Woe to the cruel and relentless man; he is himself the victim of his deeds.
27. The evil he would do to other men rebounds; the scourger is the scourged.
28. Woe to the libertine who preys upon the virtues of the weak. The hour comes when he will be the weak, the victim of a libertine of greater power.
29. Woe unto you when all the world shall speak in praise of you. The world speaks not in praise of men who live within the Holy Breath; It speaks in praise of prophets false, and of illusions base.
30. You men who walk in Holy Breath are salt, the salt of earth; but if you lose your virtue you are salt in name alone, worth nothing more than dust.
31. And you are light; are called to light the world.
32. A city on a hill cannot be hid; its lights are seen afar; and while you stand upon the hills of life men see your light and imitate your works and honour God.
33. Men do not light a lamp and hide it in a cask; they put it on a stand that it may light the house.
34. You are the lamps of God; must not stand in the shade of earth illusions, but in the open, high upon the stand.
35. I am not come to nullify the law, nor to destroy; but to fulfil.
36. The Law, the Prophets and the Psalms were written in the wisdom of the Holy breath and cannot fail.
37. The heavens and earth that are will change and pass away; the word of God is sure; it cannot pass until it shall accomplish that where unto it hath been sent.
38. Whoever disregards the law of God and teaches men to do the same, becomes a debtor unto God and cannot see his face until he has returned and paid his debt by sacrifice of life.
39. But he who hearkens unto God and keeps his law and does his will on earth, shall rule with Christ.
40. The scribes and Pharisees regard the letter of the law; they cannot comprehend the spirit of the law;
41. And if your righteousness does not exceed the righteousness of scribe and Pharisee you cannot come into the kingdom of the soul.
42. It is not what man does that gives him right to enter through the gates; his pass word is his character and desire is his character.
43. The letter of the law deals with the acts of man; the spirit of the law takes note of his desires.

Which 3-5 verses resonate with your soul this day? Take those 3-5 verses as your Lection Divina contemplation today.

Rest comfortably into your chair, slowly begin a rhythmic deep breathing. Slowly feeling your surroundings slip away. Replaced by the sounds of the gathering on the mount. Sounds of children playing, animals bleating, dust blowing. Feel the grass and sand. The strong baritone voice of the rabbi you have come to hear, that others are talking of, resonates throughout the gathering of multitudes.

Upon your first reading of the verses. Sit with them. What words stick with you. Take that phrase or word and spend time with it.

Slowly enter the second reading with that word still there, what image leaps from the page? Spend time with this image?  How does this image tie to the word/phrase that came before?

Prepare your heart for the finally hearing. The word/image have set the stage. In this third hearing, what walls have broken down? Pieces of ego removed? The words of the sermon on the mount so shook society…how has it shook you? What step of faith are you going to take to live out this teaching: Today? This week? This Month?

The seventh is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God; remember it and keep it wholly set apart for works of holiness; that is, for works not for the selfish self, but for the universal self.
Men may do work for self upon the six days of the week; but on the Sabbath of the Lord they must do naught for self.
This day is consecrated unto God; but man serves God by serving man.

-Aquarian Gospel 96:25-27

Seeing is believing, but feeling is the truth.

-Thomas Fuller

In the journey of spiritual home finding, it was looking like the UCM-Alberta group had floundered–yet–it had not. It is a group of metaphysical-spiritualists on a journey of discovery. Quite unique when you think about it as the wife and I stumbled upon them as they had lost their worship time, and were existing as a spiritual book study at the end of summer 2016.

The Aquarian Gospel of Jesus Christ  is the text we are exploring, a universalist take on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Now there are articles and spiritual practices on this blog taken from this work and inspired by the study. Yet, this quote came out during our bi-weekly discussion this past Wednesday night, around our kitchen table that for many years hosted our Rainbow Chapel, and now as the Christ light was lit, hosted UCM.

Anyways I digress, it happens for us writer types. It is a famous quote that opened this post. A quote that we usually only hold to the first part of, as it rings of St. Thomas, the one known as the doubter, who would not accept the resurrection without probing the holes on the body of the risen Jesus. Yet there is a pause, for the 1 that asked for proof, there was 13 whose emotions drove their belief. For it is in the feeling of the 13 that another truth is known. It is that truth that speaks to the Cosmic Christ that resonates within each one of us.

The Holy spark that connects each of us together with all of creation and creator. Not an old man in the sky, but rather a permeating universal energy that binds everything. That’s manifestation is L-O-V-E.

A love light filled their souls, and all the people were amazed.

-Aquarian Gospel 83:26

And what does all this same old, same old matter?  As those who are regular readers will note similar themes of living out of love, channeling that which is pure to make our world a better place.

Some may say it is the reinventing of Christianity, for some it is a new form of spirituality, yet for some it may be getting back to a pre-Constantine or an authentic Gospel life.

Yet it is intriguing this conversation happened after the last 4 weeks of release.

See, four weeks ago…something happened for my family in our journey of finding a spiritual home. We wound up in a local United Church Congregation. There has been emotional struggles over the weeks I will not lie, especially the Sunday we were asked to pray for the church that I forced a choice between vocation and my son.

Yet there is much that reflects from Wednesday’s discussion in subtle ways. A Sunday School that affirms those whom are differently abled and my son for the first time in many years feeling safe and welcomed fully enough to participate. Also not only participate, but to shoo parents away and not want us there. Yes it was only one week, but it was a week that spoke of his own heart change.

So the contemplation continues, for there needs to be more release of old pain. Allowing scars to fade some more. Yet seeing a place where my kids are welcomed for the time, is relaxing. As written before it is one of 2 places so far, and if we are to include our book study that is 3.

So what does love light filled souls look like?

It looks like the women at the empty tomb.

The disciples who left the upper room no longer afraid.

It was the moment when Jesus sat by the Samaritan Woman at the well.

The moment the Good Samaritan aided the man beaten by robbers.

When a member of our book group said she enjoys moving between houses to see our children.

Or a Sunday School teacher coming up on a Sunday Morning when I was still ill at ease by re-entering a denomination I had much history with (and not always the most healthy)…to speak directly to my son if he wanted to come to Wonder Kids.

Sometimes the love light that shines through, is in the simplest words or actions of life.

So how are you going to let your soul’s love light shine this week?
